چکیده

High residue conservation tillage systems for cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production have been proposed as having the potential to be both economically and environmentally sustainable, and research regarding till age systems has indicated that several advantages may exist for conservation tillage systems compared to con ventional tillage systems. However, adoption of new farming systems on a regional scale is difficult unless an individual farmer is willing to take the personal risk and demonstrate the sustainability of the new system on a farm. The John T. Ingram and Sons farm is an example that in 1984 adopted a high residue conservation tillage system. Located on the Coastal Plain soils of Alabama, this farm has been successfully operating as a high residue conservation tillage system from that time to the present and has served as an example for other farmers in the region. The following describes the system pres ently used on the John T. Ingram and Sons farm and presents their perspective and observations.

Adoption of Conservation - Tillage Practices and Herbicide - Resistant Seed in Cotton Production

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) defines conservation tillage as a tillage system that leaves enough crop residue to adequately protect the soil from erosion throughout the year. The percent of cover required varies by field according to soil type, slope, crop rotation, winter cover crops used and other factors (NRCS website). Conservation tillage in general and notill practice...

DIVISION S-6—SOIL & WATER MANAGEMENT & CONSERVATION Conservation Tillage Systems for Cotton in the Tennessee Valley

ern Tennessee (Stevens et al., 1992; Bradley, 1993; Triplett et al., 1996), conservation tillage practiced on silty clay Yield reductions from no-tillage cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) soils in northern Alabama resulted in 8 to 15% yield jeopardized adoption of conservation systems in the Tennessee Valley region of north Alabama in the early 1990s. We conducted a study from reductions compared ...

Tillage effects on energy use and greenhouse gas emission in wheat-cotton rotation

Crop production process utilizes input energy and produces some biomass energy as output.  During this process, greenhouse gases (GHGs) are also emitted which can make environmental risks. In this study, input and output energies, energy indices, and GHG emissions arising from inputs were estimated for wheat-cotton rotation under different tillage practices in Fars province. The study was condu...

Effect of Tillage and Planting Date on Seasonal Abundance and Diversity of Predacious Ground Beetles in Cotton

A 2-year field study was conducted in the southern High Plains region of Texas to evaluate the effect of tillage system and cotton planting date window on seasonal abundance and activity patterns of predacious ground beetles. The experiment was deployed in a split-plot randomized block design with tillage as the main-plot factor and planting date as the subplot factor. There were two levels for...

Soil organic carbon sequestration in cotton production systems of the southeastern United States: a review.

Past agricultural management practices have contributed to the loss of soil organic carbon (SOC) and emission of greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide). Fortunately, however, conservation-oriented agricultural management systems can be, and have been, developed to sequester SOC, improve soil quality, and increase crop productivity. Our objectives were to (i) review literature...
